Stroke of Dreams

Directed by Tracy Nguyen

Cast: Emily - Alejandra Lorenzo, Sarah - Song Ha, Father - Matthew Kim

Eighteen-year-old Emily clings to fleeting moments of joy as she visits her best friend Sarah, who lies in a coma. Each day, Emily returns to Sarah’s bedroom, bringing pieces of the life they once shared—clothes to try on, movies to watch, and canvases to paint. Within her imagination, Sarah is vibrant and responsive, laughing, teasing, and creating alongside her. But in reality, Sarah remains still, tethered to machines, her silence growing heavier with each passing day.

Despite gentle warnings from Sarah’s father, David, Emily refuses to let go. Her imagined interactions become a refuge, allowing her to preserve their friendship and avoid confronting the painful truth. As the days progress, the contrast between Emily’s vivid inner world and the stark reality intensifies, revealing the depth of her denial and grief.

On the third day, Emily finally faces Sarah’s condition more directly, attempting to paint—a skill Sarah once encouraged her to pursue. Through this act, Emily begins to process her emotions, holding onto the hope that she can still share something meaningful with her friend.

But when Emily returns the following day, Sarah is gone. The empty room, scattered with remnants of their shared memories, forces Emily to confront the inevitable loss she has been avoiding. In a quiet, heartbreaking moment, David offers silent support as Emily’s world shifts from imagination to acceptance.

Figs for the Summer is a tender exploration of grief, love, and the fragile space between denial and acceptance, capturing how imagination can both protect and delay the process of letting go.
