C3: The Cutting Edge: Editors Navigating the New Landscape

Editing has always required adapting to new technology, formats, and demands.

The tools and workflows are changing, but the editor’s role remains at the heart of filmmaking. Members of the Motion Picture Editors Guild (MPEG) sit down for an open, honest conversation about how they’re navigating an industry in flux, the challenges and opportunities ahead, and what the future of editing really looks like from inside the cutting room. Join this intimate discussion and bring home some wisdom straight from the filmmakers who are living and breathing editing everyday.

LIAN MCFALLS
Lian is an assistant editor and editor who comes from the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has been in post production for 10 years and has assisted on films such as “The Batman,” “Here,” and “Project Hail Mary”, along with editing two feature films. As an AVID fan of a good thriller, puzzles, legos, and building story, her side passions include snowboarding, her podcast, “Sips and Clips,” and of course a good Philly cheesesteak.

JOY FU
Joy Fu was born in China and came to the US to study film. She has worn many hats on set and in post before settling into VFX and picture editorial, on titles such as The Marvels, We Can Be Heroes, Captain America – Brave New World, and Frankenstein (2025). She celebrates the editorial community as a member in both the Pan Pacific & Asian Pacific Steering Committee and the Women’s Steering Committee by the editor’s guild.

FAROUKH VIRANI
Faroukh Virani is an LA based editor who works within both narrative and documentary formats, and he finds one storytelling style informs the other in his work. Faroukh has recent post-production credits on ABC’s “HIGH POTENTIAL,” CW’s “WALKER,” and the Amazon series “HUNTERS.”

Faroukh has a background in Film Production at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

OMEGA HSU
Omega Hsu is a Prime Time Emmy Award winning editor.  She was born in Hong Kong.  Her parents immigrated to Hawaii when she was 11.  She graduated from UCLA with a BA and MFA degrees in Film and Television.  Her editing career began on the groundbreaking CBS show Rescue 911 for 7 years.  She received a Gracie Award from American Women in Radio and Television, a Golden Mic Award from the Southern California Radio and TV News Association.  In 2003 and 2004,  she received Emmy nominations for the PBS/KCET series California Connected.  During this time, she became a member of the Motion Picture Editors Guild IATSE Local 700.  Her work on The Voice garnered her four Prime Time Creative Arts Emmy nominations for Editing (2016, 2018, 2021) winning in 2024.  In 2018, she was accepted as a member in the American Cinema Editors an honorary society.   With her 30 years of experience she considers one of her proudest achievements.is being a member of  Local 700 for 15 years.

MAYSIE HOY
Editor Maysie Hoy began her career as an actress in Vancouver, Canada where she was cast in Robert Altman’s McCabe And Mrs. Miller. Her break came on Wayne Wang’s The Joy Luck Club and she later went on to edit SMOKE for him. Her other credits include: “Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love and Coat of Many Colors.”, “Love Jones, “The Player,” “Breakthrough,” and several films for Tyler Perry: “For Colored Girls,” “Why Did I get Married?”, “Madea Goes to Jail,”  “A Jazzman’s Blues”, and “Ruth & Boaz”.

Maysie received American Cinema Editors’s Eddie nomination for “Coat of Many Colors” and “A Jazzman’s Blues “ for Best Edited Feature Film:

Ruth & Boaz was nominated for the first NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Editing in a Motion Picture, or TV series, or Special

In 2025 she received American Cinema Editors Career Achievement Award.

She serves on the Board of Directors of the Motion Picture Editors Guild and American Cinema Editors where she is Vice President.
