Directed by India Fremaux

Cast: Miriama Smith, Shianne Herewini-Liddle, Maria Walker

Mere and her daughter, Hine, set off on a road trip through rural New Zealand, where underlying tensions in their strained relationship surface. As they drive through the countryside, Mere’s sharp bite and irrational speeding clash with Hine’s quiet discontent and frustration.

Outside obstacles enflame the tension as they navigate encounters with wildlife, fellow travellers, and the ghosts of their past.

Upon reaching their destination – the family homestead – they learn that Mere’s mother, Hine’s Kui, has passed away. Hine, who barely knew her Kui due to Mere’s strained relationship with her mother, observes her mother’s grief. This poignant moment helps Hine understand the significance of their trip and the strength of their family bonds despite the conflicts.
In the midst of their loss, Hine and Mere find a renewed connection. Mere, comforted by shared memories and the presence of her sister, experiences solace in their familial ties. Through this journey and their mutual grief, Hine and Mere strengthen their bond, finding new understanding and closeness in the face of sorrow.
