Broken Mosaic

Directed by Alexandra "Lexie" Orr

The beginning of the film starts off in a scribble, sketch-like, black and white world where the audience is introduced to the two main characters, the siblings. The oldest is looking into the mirror, reflecting on their appearance. The youngest decides to tackle them leading them to the living room where the audience sees the first instance of micro-aggression from their Filipino family. The film then flips to a more experimental, collage, punkish world that represents how the micro-aggressions affect the siblings internally. At first the oldest simply takes it, with no resistance and the youngest sibling simply looks from afar, not directly affected by it yet.

The second segment is at an American school cafeteria where the oldest sibling faces racism as the kids at the end of the table starts to pull their eyes back and clogs their nose from the smell of the food the oldest sibling is eating. Another instance affecting the siblings abstract world making it greyer and greyer.

The third segment is at the dinner table when the siblings’ Japanese relatives refuses to give them Japanese food as they do not believe it is for them. The relatives also starts making comments on the youngest siblings appearance. As the abstract world is about to grey out, the climax starts as the oldest sibling decides to stand up for themselves.
The abstract world erupts in color and chaos as the siblings both yell and confidently tell their relatives off.

The final segment is when the screen cuts to black and a more metal, horror-esque aesthetic arises with eyes protruding from the walls and looking directly at the audience. The siblings start to crawl out of the eye in the middle as flashbacks of the micro-aggressions replay with scribbled doodles over them. The siblings finally emerge and kick the camera in as a final act of rebellion and self-acceptance, concluding the film.
