The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival Adds Loira Limbal’s THROUGH THE NIGHT to Feature Lineup

Nina Yang Bongiovi, Diane Quon, and Diane Paragas are added to C3:CONVERSE lineup

September 22, 2020 – (Los Angeles, CA) The 36th Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF), presented by Visual Communications (VC), runs online from September 24 to October 31, 2020 and has announced the addition of THROUGH THE NIGHT to the feature film lineup.

THROUGH THE NIGHT, a documentary by Bronx-based Afro-Latina DJ, filmmaker, and film executive Loira Limbal, explores the personal cost of our modern economy through the stories of two working mothers and a child care provider, whose lives intersect at a 24-hour daycare center. The film, which made its world premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, finds its way into the LAAPFF lineup as a special presentation that centers the tremendous value of domestic care workers, reveals the personal cost of rising wealth inequality in the U.S., and showcases the close bonds forged between parents, children, and caregivers — issues that are prevalent in many Asian American & Pacific Islander communities here in America.

“THROUGH THE NIGHT speaks to so many of us who perform care as family members and essential workers, especially for women of color,” said Francis Cullado, Executive Director of Visual Communications. “Limbal’s film shares a universal experience that transcends borders and nations, and fosters a humanized connection with each other. LAAPFF is also proud to add Meet the Makers: FIRST VOTE Live Online Event to the Festival lineup. With only a few months until the 2020 presidential election, LAAPFF joins WORLD Channel and Asian American Pacific Islander film festivals across the country to present a live screening of director Yi Chen’s film, FIRST VOTE. With unparalleled access to a diverse cross-section of politically engaged Chinese Americans, the character-driven documentary weaves stories from the presidential election of 2016 to the 2018 midterms, exploring the intersection of immigration, voting rights, and racial justice. Moderated by Richard Lui, award-winning journalist and NBC/MSNBC news anchor, this #YourVote2020 conversation will be held on Monday, September 28 at 4pm PT/7pm ET. Panelists will include the film director Yi Chen, along with film subjects Kaiser Kuo and Jennifer Ho. The recorded community experts panel will include APIAVote Executive Director Christine Chen; Janelle S. Wong – Professor of Asian American Studies, University of Maryland; Jerry Vattamala – Democracy Program Director, Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund; Chavi Koneru – Executive Director, North Carolina Asian Americans Together; and Elaine Tso – CEO, Asian Services in Action, Inc.

Previous editions of C3:Conference for Creative Content aimed to create spaces to converge during the Festival. This year, the conference becomes C3:CONVERSE – a virtual space for creators to conversate and celebrate each other. Adding to an already robust C3:CONVERSE lineup, LAAPFF is proud to announce two unique conversations with powerful women who are changing the industry. In C3: Fireside with Diane Quon, producer Nina Yang Bongiovi (FRUITVALE STATION, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, GODFATHER OF HARLEM) will sit down with Academy Award-nominated producer Diane Quon (MINDING THE GAP) in a personal conversation that covers Quon’s career from her days at NBC, to Paramount Pictures, to Kartemquin Films, and more.

In C3: Fireside with Diane Paragas, filmmaker Diane Paragas (YELLOW ROSE) will sit down with Francis Cullado to look back on the success of YELLOW ROSE since its world premiere at the 2019 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, and reflect on the road leading up to the film’s upcoming theatrical release.
