A friendship walks the distance between life and death in Nilesh Maniyar and Shonali Bose’s “A Fly on the Wall.”  Loved ones pour in from different parts of the world to raise one last toast with Chika Kapadia. In the coming week he has an appointment at Dignitas for physician assisted suicide, as he chose not to be tied to tubes and wires in his last moments.

A filmmaker friend, tasked with shooting Chika’s countdown to death, records her own feelings too. Thus, weaving a tale of dignity in death through the lens of friendship. Ironically, the locale is beautiful Switzerland – the backdrop of many a blockbuster Indian film.

“A moving portrait of Chika Kapadia’s courageous journey, a man who defied conventions to chart his own course toward a dignified end. When diagnosed with cancer and given four months to live, Chika makes the radical yet deeply personal decision to seek physician-assisted death at Dignitas in Switzerland.

Yet, rather than a story of grief, Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar make an intimate film brimming with joy and humor. Embracing his life fully in its fleeting moments, we witness Chika spending his final days in the company of those he loved most, sharing ice creams and conversations that range from the profound to the hilarious.

As both a filmmaker and friend, Bose brings an honesty and tenderness that makes this documentary as vibrant as its subject by illuminating the power of choice and the grace of saying goodbye on one’s own terms.” – Anu Rangachar, IFFLA Artistic Director
