Hail, A Taxi Home

Hong Konger filmmaker Jay and autophile Joe met on a film set in 2023, when Jay asked to use Joe’s car as a prop in a film (“Anywhere the Wind Blows”, LAAPFF 2024). A 1.5-generation Hong Konger-American college student, Joe introduces his car as the only Hong Kong taxi replica in the entire United States. Intrigued, Jay catches up a year later and wonders – what drove Joe to bring their embattled hometown’s car across the Pacific Ocean? As Joe reveals the strenuous and communal efforts that birthed his taxi, Jay questions the purpose and effectiveness of their respective diasporic cultural work.
