THE UGLY MODEL

Directed by Doris Yeung

Can Asian men be sexy? Looking at fitness model Kevin Kreider’s chiseled physique and effortless smile, the easy and obvious answer is yes. However, underneath those layers of muscle fibers, lies a loneliness and insecurity that deeply affects the psyche of a Korean adoptee growing up as an Asian male in America.

Doris Yeung’s latest documentary is a new direction for the experienced filmmaker, exploring male masculinity and the complexities of growing up as Asian in small town America. While Kevin appears to have it all: an effortless smile, washboard abs a village would flock to do laundry on, an avid social media following, and a beautiful girlfriend, Kevin’s upbringing, internal struggles, and challenges navigating an industry that doesn’t welcome him, creates a compelling subject and personal account worth exploring. —Trent Nakamura
