When the filmmaker returns to her Texas hometown to visit her mother, an artist from Iraq, she turns her lens on the beauty and isolation of her mother’s creative process. Soon, her grandfather arrives, prompting a deeper search to understand the meaning of home and search for belonging across generations.

On an extended visit to her hometown of Lubbock, Texas, filmmaker Nadia Shihab turns her lens on to the creative world of her mother. Lahib Jaddo is an Iraqi artist and professor who settled in the panhandle of Texas nearly three decades ago. As her life becomes increasingly isolated a multi-dimensional beauty persists in her work. The process of observation and improvisation in Jaddo’s work is mirrored in her daughter’s camera. She collapses time and memory onto canvas while Shihab weaves family life and visual poetics into a truly artful reflection on the creative process, American identity and crisis at the periphery.

JADDOLAND reframes the immigrant narrative with a curious and poetic lens becoming a timeless meditation on creativity, love and belonging. This film stays close to the heart and notion of home. —Micki Davis
